NAS noob question now.
how do you transfer files between folders and drives etc?
i think thats whats putting me off is ease of file management
Ooh thats an interesting question, that you would think simple to answer. NOT!
So lets say you have the NAS with 4 internal drives and say an external off usb.
The 4 drives will typically be in an array, so one protected filesystem. Off this you can have one or more network shares using this one filesystem, each can be restricted user/pc access and can have a usage limit set.
External drives are seperate filesystems so a network share would normally need to be set up to show the contents of the external on the network.
So we end up with something like:
Internal 4 drives = Filesystem 1 = Network share 1
External 1 drive = Filesystem 2 = Network share 2
So say you had a file on the external and you needed it on Filesystem 1?
Option1: mount both network shares from your PC and copy from 2 to 1. SlOW
Option2: SSH onto the NAS (It's just a linux server) and type cp /filesystem2/filename /filesystem1 (Eveything is copied locally on the NAS, you're well l33t now)
Option3: SSH onto the NAS and create a softlink connecting the external drive as a folder under Filesystem1. ie. ln -s /filesystem2 /filesystem1/External (External drive will appear as a folder under the Network share 1 , now you are super l33t, proceed to IT godlyness)
Option4: Setup RTRR (real time rsync replication) the qnap NAS' can have jobs set up to replicate between filesystems. (Not as l33t, but everything is duplicated nicely)
3 Means that everything will appear under 1 big filesystem. 4 means you do it once and then never repeat it. Moving files under 1 or 3 from a pc will result in a lot of network traffic.

Anyone else notices that iWork will only update if the apps' are in Applications/iWork 06? That's poor design / very un-Apple: why can't I put my apps where I like?
Actually on the iBook it does not even install then. Now this could actually be smart, as Aperture does not (officially) run on the iBook G4. On the other hand it could just be a glitch.

That's sweet! How secure are those latches? I'd be worried about it coming open and dumping the MBP, which would make me cry.
I'm also curious with what you've lined the inside to protect the MBP.

It is pretty bumpy on most of the tracks in the UK I think.
The Northern Line isn't too bad on that front. The worst line is definitely the Metropolitan, on which you sometimes find it difficult to stay in your seat it jumps around so much.

I would hope Steve would throw that thing at whatever moron engineer/ designer showed it to him!:D
I went to Radio Shack the other night and the store manager was tripping over himself to show me a new Sprint phone with *gasp* a color screen. I told him I was waiting for an OSX enabled phone from Apple. He said, "but we have a completely digital system built from the ground up."
uh, ok...

At least with the Xbox bundle (250 gig model with 2 games) is only 50 bucks more than the basic 4 gig model - that was the one I got. And that is a MS bundle that is all in one box.
As far as the rest is concerned, profit margins on individual systems is so razor thin, they just make more on the bundle models. Thats why the console prices are so fixed across stores.

Hi all,
Just incase anyone stumbles across this thread when they are having similar issues I wanted to post an update.
It sounds so simple but I think my wake issues may have actually just been down to weak batteries in my keyboard.
After 10.6.7 some people were reporting that they were getting the wrong battery life metering for wireless devices. Some people had their power levels stuck at 100% even though the batteries had previously been showing 50% depletion before updating to 10.6.7
My keyboard was showing 46% yesterday but I thought to eliminate the possibility of the mac pro waking due to a lost keyboard connection due to weak batteries, I changed them out for fresh batteries.
My mac went to sleep last night and slept the whole night, until I woke it this morning.
I'll try it again later but I'm pretty certain that's all it was.
Oh well, at least I've got a freshly installed OS and clean running machine now, even though all I actually needed to do was swap some batteries! :)

It's going to be a 27", 1 TB Drive - that's where I'm at now. The question is the same old question, so I apologize for that in advance. But this will be my first real Mac computer, I already have iPhone and iPad.
Considering the following uses (top ranges), how much will I actually need to upgrade from the base model? I know more is better, but is more actually needed?

All of my browsers regularly freeze on MySpace. I regularly get a "playlist not valid" or some error like that because apparently the WMP 10 has a different format and since WMP9 for Mac was only available months after WMP10 for Windows, it doesn't know anything about the other. I suppose we should be thankful that we have WMP9 at all.
Anyway, from my experience you can't get things to work unless you use Windows. Apparently, Tom, the main person in charge uses a PowerBook to work on the site but everything is running on Windows NT 4. At least, I see the error messages for NT 4 once a month.

LCDs looks horrible when not ran at their native resolution. You will definitely want to run it at 2560x1600. If the text is too small, sit closer or make the fonts bigger.

As I've posted in multiple other threads that are not outdated and ask the same question. Look into this page that reveals the compatible camera list for iMovie.

I'm guessing it is something with no-ip then, what happens if you try to access the pictures via the IP address and port (if you are using no-ip to forward to a port other than port 80)?
No-IP is only a DNS service, so you don't actually get data through their servers.
